Let’s refer to Psalms 102, verses 6 and 7. The title of the Psalms reads: “A prayer of an afflicted man. When he is faint and pours out his lament before the Lord”
Why was God’s person afflicted? Why did he have to lament?
There are 2 reasons as to why sorrows can occur:
- Problems can happen to us as permitted by the Lord.
- Or we could have did something critical as led by our human thoughts and end up in problems and hence worry.
One of the main reasons why sorrows occur is that we move away from the position that the Lord had planted us in. An example of this is Adam and Eve. The lost their position just because they could not withstand a small test that the Lord had put them through.
Another example is Lot. He was in his position and on his track (following Abraham) until he was tempted by worldly riches. When he lost his position and took a different track, his life became miserable.
In Psalms 102: 6, 7, we read about the dessert owl. The owl usually lives in the trees but now it has lost its position and lives in the dessert where there is no blessing.
Are we living a life like this? Its time to analyze!
If we leave the position that the Lord kept us we will be forced to lament. So here we go – The reasons why lose our positions and hence lament!
Failure to stick to sound doctrines of the Lord
The first and the foremost reason why people leave their position (that the Lord had kept them) is that they don’t want to listen to the Lord’s words and live by those words.
In Timothy 4:3 we read that people find Lord’s doctrines to be bitter. They have itching ears and they do not want to hear the sound doctrines of the Lord; but they only want to hear what suits their own desires.
I Timothy 6: 3-5 reads that we must be willing and wanting to hear sound instructions of the Lord and to His godly reaching. We must stay away from those who have controversial thoughts about God’s doctrines.
[box color=”white” type=”square” icon=”hand_point”]In fact, we should stay away from wrong doctrine, bad doctrine and deceitful doctrine.[/box]
As we read in Acts 2: 42, the teaching comes before fellowship, communion and prayer.
Lost awareness and lost position
Owl is usually a bird that is vigilant. It is also vigilant during the night. Similarly if we dwell with the Lord, He will keep our lamp burning and turn our darkness into light (Psalms 18: 28).
Now if the owl (we) misses its position, there won’t be any light, and we will not be vigilant as well (Isaiah 60: 20).
If we leave our position, we leave the Lord. If we leave the Lord we invite satan. We should be either with the Lord or with the satan. As the Lord says in Matthew 26: 41, we must keep watch and pray to the Lord (I Peter 5: 8).
Lost the experience of communion and went far away from the Lord
An analogy of communion is explained in Exodus 29: 12. If the bird had stayed near the altar it would have consumed the bread and blood from the altar. But now the bird stays on roof top, sleepless.
If we stay up sleepless it means that we are not loved by the Lord (Psalms 127: 32). If we engage in activities that are not pleasing to the Lord, then the Lord won’t love us.
As we read in Psalms 22:1, the Lord will not be near us if we lead a displeasing life. And in Psalms 73: 27 we read that if we go far away from the Lord, we will perish. He will destroy all those who are unfaithful to Him.
So to recap – here are three reasons as to why God’s men/women are afflicted and have to lament:
[box color=”white” type=”square” icon=”hand_point”]
- Failed to stick to sound doctrines of the Lord.
- Lost awareness.
- Lost the experience of communion and went far away from the Lord.
Do you have any of these reasons in your life? If so, its time to get rid of them and set things right!
