In Matthew 16:18, Jesus says to Peter, that you are “Peter” but I will build my Church upon the stone. “Peter” means “rock”. So Jesus says, you’re Peter, but however I will build my Church upon the (corner) stone (that is Jesus).
Let’s take a look at the type of stones that can become the house of God.
Genesis 28: 18,19
Jacob poured oil upon the stone and called that place “Bethel” – El ~ refers to the Lord our God, Beth ~ refers to home. This means that the stone upon which the oil was poured became the House of Lord.
The stone was an ordinary one until it was anointed with oil after which the ordinary stone changed into the House of the Lord.
Gen. 35: 10-14 – God confirms that He is willing to give the land that He promised to Abraham to Jacob and his descendants. This happens at Bethel.
If we are anointed by God’s Spirit and if we live as the house of the Lord, God will conform to us the blessing He promised to our ancestors.
Speaking in tongues inside the Church may be a sign of the anointment of Holy Spirit. But that alone doesn’t guarantee that a person is anointed by the Holy Spirit. Whether or not a believer is anointed by Holy Spirit is only evident in his behavior and deeds outside the church; it can be evident on how they behave when the fellow believers and the pastor are not watching them.
Ephesians 5: 9, 10 – Those who are filled with Holy Spirit will be filled with goodness, righteousness and truth. According to Acts 1: 8 Jesus commands that when we are filled with the Holy Spirit we must be witnesses to Him to the ends of the world.
We must be witnesses to the God so that the gentiles come to our Lord by seeing our good deeds and our righteous living.
Galatians 3: 14 – When we receive the Holy Spirit, God promises that we receive the blessings that were guaranteed to Abraham and his descendants.
Ephesians 2: 18-22 – If we are built on the cornerstone (Jesus Christ) we will be fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household.
Acts 2: 42 – We have to devote ourselves to the teachings and fellowship of the apostles.
These are the signs that we have received the Spirit of the Lord.
1 Peter 2: 4,5 – We have to transform into living stones once we come to the living stone (Jesus Christ). Prior to coming closer to the living stone there was not life in us; we were merely stones.
Those who have not been anointed by the Holy Spirit cannot become the House of the Lord.
Ezekiel 28: 16 – We have to be fiery stones. This implies that we have to live a life of stubbornness for our Lord. A very good example of this is Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. When there was a situation of death when they had to stand for the Lord, they stood for the Lord and did not sacrifice their stubbornness for the Lord even when they had to face death.
Numbers 25: 11-13 – Phinehas (son of Eleazar) had the zeal for the Lord. When we encounter sin in the church of the Lord (when some believer goes against God), we have to be bold enough to correct them. We have to pray for them. Pastors of the church should warn them with the word of God. They should not neglect such sins for any kind of compensation (for instance, if that particular believer is the one who gives a good sum of offering and tithe).
John 2: 17 – We have to have zeal for the house of the Lord. Our body is the house of the Lord; hence we should not go with the gentiles to please them and be part of the sin.
Hebrews 12: 4 – We have to resist sin to the point of shedding our blood, if we have to.
We have to be flint stones so that people who hear our words or look at our deeds are changed in their minds so that they submit to God’s words and commands.
Exodus 4: 25 – Zipporah took a flint knife and cut off her son’s foreskin. She did not do it until she realized that God was about kill her son. She was postponing this act until she faced a critical situation.
Hebrews 4:12 – The word of God is sharper than any double-edged sword. It divides soul and spirit, and joints and marrow. God’s word is so sharp so that it penetrates deeper into our souls so that there is a change in our minds; so that we submit ourselves to Lord’s commands.
Apostles 2: 37 – When Peter preached the hard words of God, the people were cut to the heart and they submitted themselves to the Word of God.
Romans 2: 29 – God says that circumcision is circumcision of the heart, circumcision of the Spirit; not the outward circumcision.

1 Kings 6:7 – We have to offer ourselves to God’s hands so that he finishes off the works in us (the stones) so that we become part of the church of God. When we are completely finished we will become blocks in the house of the Lord.
Zechariah 3: 9 – Lord says that He has set all His seven eyes on that one stone where God’s inscription is being engraved. We are that stone and upon us our Lord is engraving His inscription and has set His seven eyes on us. Hence we have to offer ourselves to be completely engraved and be perfect during the second coming of our Lord.
