In 1 Corin. 3: 16, God puts forth a question: Do you not know that you are the temple of God?
The heaven is a posh place where the Lord receives worship and praise from the umpteen number of (various types of) angels. But God wants to dwell among us!
Since this body of ours is the temple of God, we need to keep it clean and in accord so that God can come and dwell inside us.
It is our duty. We should not neglect our body that it will die one day and get back to the earth. Even though this is true, the Lord comes and dwells inside our body while we are alive.
Hence it is of utmost importance that we maintain our body that is perfect for our dear God to come and dwell and that He feels pleasant inside us.
If we do not realize the fact that our body is God’s temple (where He dwells), we separate God from us as if He is someone who needs to be kept at a distance and worshiped. So naturally, after our Sunday worship service, or after our Bible reading and prayer session is over, we get back to our sins. But God wants to come close to us and dwell within us, always.
How can we keep our bodies clean and perfect?
I) Ephesians 2:19,20
Jesus should be the chief cornerstone
Jesus should be the chief cornerstone in our lives; that stone is a very crucial one, upon which the foundation is laid and upon which the household is built on.
We should not keep any of our worldly things (like, our wealth, health, our dear ones, our possessions etc.) as our cornerstone in our lives.
We should rather, build our worldly and spiritual life upon the preachings and words of Jesus Christ.
No matter what our worldly status is, but if we place our Lord as our base, we can keep our body clean.
Psalms 118: 22
The Lord was rejected by the people when He came to this world as a salvation. But He later became the cornerstone!
We need to therefore, run a check upon ourselves often to see if Jesus Christ is our cornerstone.
If at the time of trouble, we seek our friends, family, or other fellow believers, then it means that we have placed that person as a cornerstone in our lives.
Rather we should first seek out to the Lord at times of trouble.
Acts 4: 11,12
There is no other name under the heaven that can become a cornerstone and that can save men from their sins. If we place our lives over the chief cornerstone (Jesus Christ) and not place anyone else in that position, we can keep our body as the temple of God.
1 Corin. 3: 11 – There is certainly no other cornerstone or a foundation apart from Jesus Christ.
Isaiah 28: 16
The cornerstone (Jesus Christ) is at Zion, it has been tested, it is a precious and a pure stone and it is a sure foundation for our lives. Thus if we believe in that stone we need not act hastily.
Blend yourselves with the Lord
II) Ephesians 2: 21
The whole building is joined together – this is the key – We need to blend ourselves with the Lord and do according to His Will.
If we do not go according to the Will of God we cannot be His temple; that’s for sure.
Ephesians 4: 16
It is because of Jesus Christ, the whole body is joined and knit together. It is very crucial that all our body parts are joined and knot together, for the right functioning of our body (as a literal example).
Thus if our body and our will goes in accordance with the Will of God it can function as the temple of God.
If our body and our will is knit together with that of God, we will cause the growth of our body for the edifying of itself in love.
Here is a quick test to see if you do something in accord with God’s Will:
Let it be anything that you want to do. Make sure you start that thing with a prayer. For instance, if you are going to eat your breakfast, just start with a small prayer (thanking the Lord and that the food shall give you strength).
At the same time if you are going to steal from your partner’s purse, can you start that act with a prayer? You can’t.
This is how you can test if you are doing everything in accordance with God’s Will (so that you can be His temple).
Try this out!
III) 2 Corin. 6: 16
We have to separate ourselves from anything that is not in accordance with God’s ways.
If we have to be God’s temple, we should get rid of all the unwanted and unnecessary things that make our body and soul unclean.
Lets see what we should get away from –
2Timothy 2:23 – foolish and ignorant disputes.
Acts 15: 29 – things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, from sexual immorality, etc. According to verse 28, to stay away from these things is highly necessary and these principles are given to us by the Holy Spirit. If we keep ourselves from these we will do well.
